To help you make the move as easy as possible, we’ve consulted with some ex-students and pulled together a list of must-haves for your first-year university packing list.
Sleeping and living essentials:
- Duvet, pillows, a mattress protector, and two sets of bedding (sheets, duvet cover, pillowcases).
- Laundry basket or bag and a clothes airer.
- Coat hangers.
- Photos, posters, a few books, mementoes and other personal items to make the room feel like home.

Kitchen, cooking and washing up:
- Plates, bowls, mugs, glasses and a basic cutlery set (just one or two of each).
- A small saucepan, frying pan, a baking tray and one or two sharp chopping knives.
- Wooden spoon, spatula, tin opener, bottle opener and a cheese grater.
- A lunchbox and travel mug/bottle for meals on the go.
- And, as you’re cooking for one: a few plastic containers for leftovers
- Tea towels, a washing up brush and dishcloths.

- Laptop, chargers, a power bank and an extension lead (preferably surge-protected).
- Paper, pens, highlighters, folders and a wall planner.
- A comfortable backpack for carrying essential items to and from lectures.

Bathroom and health:
- Shampoo and conditioner, shower gel, toothbrush and toothpaste, hand soap, skincare products, razor, refill blades and aftershave balms.
- A little shower caddy or bag to carry toiletries to and from any shared bathroom.
- Two bath towels and two hand towels.
- A dressing gown and flip flops.
- A small first aid kit with plasters, over the counter headache pills as well as any prescription medicine.
