The Great Exhibition of the North

The Great Exhibition of the North is a free, summer-long celebration of the North of England’s pioneering spirit.

The country’s biggest event in 2018, it will pack a programme of amazing exhibits, live performances, displays of innovation, new artworks and unforgettable experiences into 80 days, running from 22nd June until 9th September 2018.

If you’re planning to take in some of the many events on and around the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside, then why not call in to see us at Trinity Square – we’re just up the bank from the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts.

The centre was built on the former site of architect Rodney Gordon’s multi-story car park. Built in the Brutalist style, the car park had a prominent role in the 1971 film Get Carter, and so was commonly referred to as the “Get Carter car park”. Today however you’ll be made more than welcome by all of our retailers… and of course you’ll be able to see our impressive 27ft sculpture, “Halo”, which reflects both the design and innovation arms of the Great Exhibition of the North.

Designed by local artist, Steve Newby, the ‘Halo’ installation is a stunning gravity-defying spectacle stretching 27 -foot in the form of a loop at the centre of Trinity Square, which by night is illuminated by colour changing fibre-optic lights. The sculpture is a fitting link to the Town’s steel heritage and symbol of its post-industrial renewal.
